Forward of a message from Pat Coppel who notes:
He's the son of Barbara Falk nee Cohen who lives two doors from me in Parkville. Barbara is an extraordinary woman of 95 who is also a former colleague of Dad's in the history department at the University of Melbourne. She's a descendant of Henry Cohen the convict and her line is full of amazing stories. Her mother was Freda Pirani (the Piranis used to live next door to my great grandfather Albert Coppel). She wrote a book about her ancestors called "No Other Home". It's a beauty and one of the finest family stories I've read.
PS: I just remembered this from my grandfather's memoir J:
ÉSo my father went to the city each morning by cable tram. Mr. Pirani who lived next door frequently caught the same tram, but not having been formally introduced, of course, they never spoke to one another. Finally one morning Mr. Pirani said - "Good morning Mr. Coppel" and my father burst out laughing. When asked what was so funny, he replied - "We have been living next door to one another for five years without speaking and tomorrow we are moving from our house".

As to family history:
· Leah's brother appears to be Gordon, as verified by Birth registers in NSW (son of Herbert and Annie 1889 in Gunnedah. He may have been called "Eddie' by family for some reason
· Leah would have been about 31 years when she left her family
· Leah's husband was Hector Thomas Proudfoot (1890 – 1959), son of William James Bruce Proudfoot and Sarah Baccon
· Leah's children were Bruce Charles (1911 – 1994 {I think}), Samuel George (1915 – 1943, pilot killed in India WWII), Valetta Rose (1917 –1999; my mum), Douglas Clive 1918 – 1992{I think})and Edward Wallace 1919 -- 1941 killed Middle East WWII)
· My maiden name is Lesley Joan Strong, daughter of Edward Alexander Strong (1911—2008) and Valetta Rose (above)
· Leah worked in Freemasons Hotel, Crown St Wollongong with her father, both of whom worked for Herbert's brother, David Cohen the licensee. David died in 1942 at the age of 69
· I do not have any history on Leah's brother. I have found a marriage of Gordon to a lady Dale but I have no verification that this is the same person. My memory of grandma talking of her brother led me to believe he had died sometime earlier.
I have a son and daughter with their families in Melbourne.
My son, Michael, is battling his way through life in a courageous and optimistic manner, three years down the track from being rendered a quadriplegic after being hit by a truck whilst cycling on Beach Rd. He has been in the media quite a bit for various purposes.
Daughter, Sally is a corporate lawyer, in-house for Jemena. She finds much of it ethically challenging and says having teacher –parents does her no favours!!
