237. Ellis Island Database, "passenger lists of ships," http://www.ellisisland.org.
Irene Newhouse reports:
The Ellis Island database, http://www.ellisisland.org has the passenger lists of all ships docking at Ellis Island from something like 1890 to 1924. There weren't that many Cassirers. The really intriguing one is Franz, age 24, arrived in 1910, to visit a frienf Dr. F. Grumbacher & to be staying at the Astor. His next of kin at home was listed as father, Stadtrat Cassirerr, Charlottenberg, Augsburgerstr. 54.
The question of who he is is answered the next year, when Friedrich Wilhelm C. , age 23 arrived. His next of kin is I. M. Cassirer, 54 Augsburgerstr, Berlin W 50. So above Franz is one of the unidentified children of Isidor C. This arrival is stamped "visiting tourist".
In 1909, Moritz C, a US citizen age 57 was coming back with his daughter Jeanette age 17, who was US born. So that's probably another of his children...
In 1923, Paul & Ottilie C arrived in NY for 2 months; visiting friend Henry Reinhart. A few lines up from them is the party of Sir Joseph Duveen, who's listed as "art expert"; Paul's an "art dealer"... Paul's next-of-kin is listed as "stepbrother Mr. Paret" Victoriastr 35 Berlin.
