Berthold was a very successful lawyer representing international cartels. In 1935 he was warned that his arrest was imminent, so without delay, he left for the United States. He was accompanied on his trip by Pim’s previous hsuband, Fritz Behrendt , sharing the same cabin on the ship and the same hotel room in New York. Berthold remained, while my Fritz returned to Germany to retrieve his wife and mother. Four months later, Pim followed with her oldest daughter, Annemarie, to find a place for the family to settle, while the remaining 6 children stayed in a boarding school to follow about 4 months later. By 1936, almost everyone was living harmoniously in Great Neck, Long Island, NY.1050
