Annette Atsmon writes: Grethe was her [Marianne Boedlander's] oldest sister, schoolteacher, married to Johannes Austerlitz, a judge in Essen. She was 14 years older than my mother. I have letters from Johannes (Hans) telling about Grete's illness and death, they lived in one shabby room together with another couple, friends, also a judge, chased out of their homes. There is also a letter from him where he says farewell, very moving. My mother read the letter every day, Both Willy and Grete were childless. I visited both couples in Essen and Breslau when I was 4 years old, before we left Berlin to go to Copenhagen."
