All children are adopted. Three of the children (Lionel, David and Virginie) have the same mother but different fathers. The boys were the sons of a cleaning lady and the cleaning lady dumped the children social services when she went off with Virginie's father. Odette looked after them and then adopted them. She then adopted Hsieng who was a Cambodian war orphan. When Virginie was about 15, she turned up on the doorstep and said she wanted to be adopted too.
