Lucy died during the Second World War while her son David Schoenbrun was an American soldier liberating occupied France. Lucy died in a traffic accident in New York. David's wife, Dorothy Schoenbrun (born Scher), wrote the news of Lucy's death to David who was risking his life on a daily basis in France. He was profoundly shocked that his mother died in peaceful New York.227
